Launch of the National Root Key for the Public Key Infrastructure (PKI)
In a step that reflects the determination of the Sudanese state to continue building and advancing despite the exceptional circumstances facing the country, the National Root Key for the Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) was officially launched during a formal ceremony attended by representatives of government institutions and stakeholders involved in the digital transformation and cybersecurity sectors.
This launch represents a significant milestone in Sudan’s journey toward establishing digital trust and strengthening information sovereignty. The national root key forms the technical foundation upon which electronic signature services, secure government communications, and digital document verification are built, thereby enhancing the reliability and credibility of electronic transactions across state institutions.
During the event, the Director General of the Sudanese Cybersecurity Authority (SCA) addressed the audience, highlighting the strategic dimensions of the project and its role in strengthening the protection of the national cyberspace and reinforcing trust in digital services. He emphasized that building a national digital trust infrastructure constitutes a fundamental pillar for Sudan’s digital transformation pathway.
This achievement comes after extensive efforts to rebuild the country’s digital infrastructure, which had suffered significant damage during the war. The project was implemented by Sudanese expertise and national competencies, through the efforts of engineers from the Electronic Certification Authority and with contributions from national specialists, supported by relevant stakeholders. This collaborative effort reflects institutional integration in safeguarding critical digital infrastructure and strengthening technological sovereignty.
The launch of the National Root Key marks the beginning of a new phase of sovereign digital services. In the coming period, several initiatives related to the Public Key Infrastructure will be introduced, most notably:
- Securing government communications between state institutions.
- Launching electronic signature services for official documents and transactions.
- Enabling government digital platforms to utilize digital signatures in service delivery.
- Adopting a secure visual seal supported by QR Code technology to verify official documents and certificates.
This step comes within the framework of a broader national vision aimed at building an integrated digital trust environment that supports Sudan’s digital transformation and ensures that government electronic services are managed with the highest levels of security and reliability.
During the event, emphasis was also placed on the importance of regulating the use of encryption technologies within government institutions in accordance with approved national frameworks, in order to protect the digital space and enhance interoperability among government systems.
This milestone sends a clear message that Sudan, despite ongoing challenges, continues to build modern digital institutions and relies on its national capabilities to strengthen its digital sovereignty and establish a secure and trusted technological infrastructure that serves both the state and its citizens.
